The Jews use the word Yovel for Jubilee. Yovel is from the word "yabal" meaning "ram's horn" or "trumpet". This is because God said to mark the start of the Jubilee year with the blowing of a trumpet.

9Then on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year,a blow the ram’s horn loud and long throughout the land. 10Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to your own clan. ~ Leviticus 25:9-10

The Jews have not celebrated Jubilee since about 600 BC, when some of the tribes were exiled from the land. They stopped keeping track of the Jubilee years altogether (Why? I have no clue. They know that they will all be in the land again, so it seems like they should at least be keeping the record of the Jubilee years).

The calendar we use today has a long and messy history. No one can claim that this year is even 2016 years from the birth of Christ... I mean, I'm sure it's close, but of course not exact. The only consistent calendar is the Hebrew Calendar and no where is it written what the Hebrew calendar year was when Christ was born or died. Even though there is no historical way to know if Christ's crucifixion and resurrection was in a Jubilee year, we can see that it more than likely was. Because we know that  God decreed all of the feasts to be a sign to His people of the coming Messiah... He made the whole Bible point to Christ! It is hard to believe that He wasn't crucified and risen in a holy year all about celebrating freedom.

Here are the main decrees from God for the Year of Jubilee:

  • As we saw in the above verses, Jubilee is a holy year.
  • This year was a time set apart to celebrate freedom.
  • In Jubilee, God's will return to their land and their people.
  • As in the Shemitah (Sabbatical Year celebrated every 7 Years), this a year of rest for the land. No planting or harvesting. That means that the Jubilee year was a second helping of rest, since the year before Jubilee is a Shemitah Year.
  • It is also second decree of restful increase.
For it is the Yovel(Jubilee); it shall be kodesh(holy) unto you; ye shall eat the tevuah (increase) thereof out of the sadeh (land, field).
~ Leviticus 25:12
  • In the Shnat Yovel (Year of Jubilee), every man will return unto his possession.
  • Land could not be permanently sold at anytime. There was always a chance for the seller of the property, or the seller's family, to buy it back (redeem). But if the land could not be redeemed in the previous years, in the Jubilee year, the land must be returned, at no cost, to the original owners.
  • A house sold within a walled town will not be given back. It must be redeemed within a year of the sale. But a house sold in the countryside or village must be returned in the year of Jubilee
  • ALL Levites received their houses back in Jubilee.
  • As in the Shemitah, Hebrew slaves of Hebrew Owners must be released. But in the Jubilee year the slaves must return to their clan/land.
  • Foreigners must release Hebrew Slaves in the year of Jubilee

We don't know the exact years of the Jubilee, because God didn't tell us. He didn't tell us because it's simply not important for us to know. We believers live in a constant Jubilee! Christ was the atoning sacrifice for our sins and now our lives are overflowing with restful increase and freedom from the bondage of sin and the curse. We have been freely given redemption and have been forever reconciled to our Father! We are His possession and He is ours!

Read Leviticus 25

Because I know God is not angry with His children and that His protection and provision is a fact forever, I don't subscribe to the doom and gloom of the end times.
But here is an interesting video about Jubilee by Messianic Rabbi, Jonathan Cahn.
He believes that we are in the 70th Jubilee (which is the 40th Jubilee since Christ died).
